BEING MADE THE OTHER

PERSPECTIVES FROM (DANCE) ART AND EVERYDAY LIFE

DURATION: 90 MINUTES

What strategies exist to position oneself in the global world in a self-determined manner? Julia Binter

(Kunsthalle Bremen) and Virginie Kamche (Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen e. V.) talk about self-attributions and attributions by others in art and everyday life. The discussion is based on the exhibition ‘Der blinde Fleck. Bremen und die Kunst in der Kolonialzeit’ (opening in August 2017 at the Kunsthalle Bremen) and the socio-political engagement of the Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen. Afterwards, the dancers Phumlani Mndebele and Kossi Sebastien Aholou-Wokawui from the co-production of the South African Vuyani Dance Theatre and steptext dance project with the choreographer Helge Letonja describe their perspective on dealing with attributions and postcolonial entanglements.

ON THE VALUE OF DANCE ²

In February 2015, TANZ Bremen along with steptext dance project and the Dachverband

Tanz Deutschland brought a number of actors of the Bremer dance scene together, thus lighting a beacon for a new togetherness and a joint cultural-political offensive. The foundation of the Tanzinitiative Bremen, a position paper, the dance ensemble expert meeting and the Bremer Tanztage 2016 were the initial results, with which the cultural-political dialogue was also expanded beyond Bremen.

In the one-day workshop with dance professionals and cultural promoters, a transregional network for dance in north-western Germany is to be initiated. With a view to the new dance promotion programmes of cities, federal states and the government, the question is raised: Which co-operation projects can be established to further develop high-quality dance?
