Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) didn’t paint what she saw but what her body felt. For more than six decades, the grand dame of Austrian painting explored in innumerable self-portraits how she perceives herself as and through a body. ‘Body consciousness paintings’ is what she called her art, in which she discovered a path between figurativeness and abstraction. Based on Lassnig’s specific body concept, the inclusive collective of the tanzbar_bremen develops its own moving images in the frame of the exhibition at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum. The female dancers combine elements of the existing repertoire with newly inspired movements, intertwining experience with inspiration. The result is an interplay with the exhibited works that time and again gives rise to surprising spatial and bodily constellations. KÖRPER IN BEWEGUNG is a work that subtly retraces Lassnig’s ‘sensations in the housing of the body’ with own artistic means.
TANZBAR_BREMEN is a collective of dancers, choreographers and cultural producers with different abilities. The work focuses on strengthening contemporary dance through an inclusive principle in the joint creation, presentation and implementation of dance productions for the stage and public space, of entertainment, workshop and festival formats, as well as education offers. These have been developed since 2003 at the Schwankhalle Bremen in close cooperation with steptext dance project.
